Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What gas can be detected with the 1392nm DFB laser?

A: The 1392nm wavelength is commonly used for water vapor (H₂O) absorption spectroscopy and can be applied to TDLAS-based moisture and water vapor detection. The specific absorption line and operating conditions should be evaluated based on the gas concentration, optical path length, and system design. Box Optronics also offers DFB laser diodes at other wavelengths for different gas sensing requirements.

Q: What is the difference between this TO60 DFB laser and a butterfly-packaged DFB laser?

A: The main differences are the package format, optical interface, and cost.

The TO60 version features a compact hermetic metal-can package with an integrated TEC, thermistor, and aspheric lens for free-space optical coupling.

Butterfly DFB lasers are typically available with fiber-pigtailed output and may integrate additional functions such as an optical isolator and monitor photodiode, depending on the configuration.

With its simpler package and free-space optical output, the TO60 version provides a more cost-effective option for gas sensing and other applications where fiber coupling and additional integrated functions are not required. The choice depends on the required optical coupling method, package size, and system architecture.

Q: How does the integrated TEC improve gas detection performance?

A: The integrated TEC and 10kΩ thermistor provide temperature control for the DFB laser, helping maintain stable operating conditions and reduce wavelength drift caused by temperature variations. Temperature control is important in TDLAS systems because the laser wavelength must remain aligned with the target absorption feature. The TEC specifications should be considered together with the laser operating temperature range and the requirements of the complete gas sensing system.

Operation Notes and Handling

· Laser diodes are electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitive devices. Proper ESD protection procedures should always be followed during handling.

· The modules should be handled in the same manner as ordinary semiconductor devices to prevent electrostatic damage. For safe keeping and carrying, the modules should be packaged with ESD-proof material.

· To assemble the modules on a PCB, the workbench, the soldering iron, and the human body should be grounded.

· Store unused devices at recommended storage temperature (-40°C to +85°C) in ESD-safe packaging.

· Do not exceed the absolute maximum ratings specified in the datasheet, including 100mA maximum forward current and 2V maximum forward voltage.

· Always use a laser diode driver with current limiting and over-voltage protection.

· Enable TEC temperature stabilization before applying laser drive current for optimal performance and wavelength stability.

· Avoid touching the aspheric lens surface with bare fingers to prevent contamination. If cleaning is needed, use isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and a lint-free swab.

· Solder reflow temperature: maximum 260°C for 10 seconds. Avoid excessive soldering time or temperature.
