Product Overview-Silicon Photodiode TO46

Box Optronics offers high-performance Silicon PIN Photodiodes designed for visible and near-infrared light detection across the 400nm to 1000nm wavelength range. Featuring a 680×680μm active area with planar incident structure, these devices deliver high responsivity, fast response speed, low dark current, and low junction capacitance.

Available in two package configurations — hermetic TO46 flat-window metal can and fiber-coupled coaxial module — our silicon photodiodes provide flexible integration options for diverse application requirements. The TO46 package is ideal for free-space detection and PCB-level integration, while the fiber-coupled module offers convenient plug-and-play connectivity with a 50/125μm multimode fiber pigtail.

Both versions are RoHS-compliant and operate reliably over a wide temperature range from -40°C to +85°C. These attributes make the silicon photodiode series well-suited for optical power meters, optical sensors, space light detection equipment, and instrumentation applications requiring stable, high-sensitivity photodetection.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the difference between the TO46 and fiber-coupled module versions?

A: Both versions use the same 680×680μm silicon photodiode chip and share identical electro-optical specifications. The difference is in packaging: the TO46 flat-window version is designed for free-space optical detection and direct PCB mounting, while the fiber-coupled module comes with a pre-aligned 50/125μm multimode fiber pigtail for direct integration into fiber-optic systems. Choose based on your optical interface requirements.

Q: What wavelength range do these silicon photodiodes cover?

A: The silicon photodiodes have a spectral response range of 400nm to 1000nm, covering the visible spectrum and near-infrared band. Peak responsivity is in the 800–900nm range, with typical values of 0.35A/W at 800nm and 0.40A/W at 900nm. They are not suitable for wavelengths beyond 1000nm — for 1310nm/1550nm applications, consider our InGaAs PIN photodiode series.

Q: What is the saturation power of the photodiode?

A: The minimum saturation optical power is 2mW. For input powers above this level, the photodiode response will begin to deviate from linearity. For higher power measurements, consider using an attenuator or selecting a photodiode with a larger active area.

Q: What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

A: The MOQ forsilicon photodiode is 1 unit. We support flexible order quantities. For standard models, we can supply from just a few pieces for R&D and prototyping up to thousands of units for volume production. Contact us for specific pricing at your required quantity.

Q: Do you offer custom versions of these silicon photodiodes?

A: Yes, we provide customization services including custom fiber types and lengths, alternative connector options, and modified package configurations. Contact us with your requirements and our engineering team will review feasibility and provide a quotation.

Q: Are the TO46 packages hermetically sealed?

A: Yes, the TO46 flat-window package is hermetically sealed in a metal can with a glass window, providing protection against moisture, dust, and environmental contaminants. This ensures reliable long-term operation in various industrial and laboratory environments.

Operation Notes and Handling

· Photodiodes are electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitive devices — always use proper ESD protection when handling

· Avoid touching the leads and window directly with bare fingers to prevent contamination and ESD damage

· Store unused devices in ESD-safe packaging or conductive trays to prevent electrostatic discharge damage

· Do not exceed the absolute maximum ratings specified in the datasheet

· Clean the optical window with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free swab if contamination occurs

· Soldering: Recommended soldering temperature ≤260°C for ≤10 seconds, at least 1.5mm from the case

· Observe proper polarity — reverse connection may cause permanent damage
